I teach film production with the Derek Jarman Lab, Birkbeck’s audiovisual hub. It’s a joy to facilitate filmmaking for those who haven’t used it before, whether they are digital natives or senior academics. I’ve worked with 16-year-olds, undergraduates, academic faculty and members of the public to help them understand how to make and use film effectively in a short period of time.
I’m a faculty member on the Pittsburgh-London Film Programme, teaching history and film production through explorations of the city symphony film and its iterations through the 20th century. Seeing London through new eyes, as our American students get to grips with the cameras and the city at the same time, is an experience I enjoy every term.
I also run workshops and events around filmmaking for academics. This is a programme I ran at Birkbeck on fair dealing for academics and filmmakers, which reviewed the important exemptions to the Copyright Act set out in 2014.
